One Less Chore To Do

Updated: Aug 19

If you’re reading this and enjoy doing chores, stop now—you’re weird! Just kidding. Stick around. This will only take a minute or two.

When we gather in D-groups and work through Disciples Making Disciples, Book 1, participants are introduced to eight spiritual postures: surrender, Bible reading, prayer, fasting, waiting on God, humility, service, and worship. Do you view these chores?

The Pharisees loved spiritual chore charts, but Jesus thought otherwise. In Matthew 23:4, Jesus told the crowd that the Pharisees "tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people's shoulders."

Over the years, I’ve noticed a pattern: many people begin D-group with good intentions, but the weight of accountability makes them uncomfortable. They eventually quit the group.

Others see the disciplines as irrelevant—helpful for “Bible characters” two thousand years ago, but not for today.

Some people finish Book 1 or even Book 2, close the book, and slide the book(s) onto a shelf I call the "Book graveyard" with the other books that are seldom or never visited. When asked about D-groups, this person might say, “Oh, I’ve already done that." The problem? They gained knowledge but missed God’s heart for the lost.

Some people get it. They lean into Book 1 and press through the discomfort. Then, Book 2 provides them with the tools to pursue kingdom advancement. They don’t just learn the postures—they live them. Then, they engage the lost and saved, share the gospel, disciple others, and become invested in their local church.

DON'T MISS THIS: We are on the right path for God to move in and through us when the postures become who we are instead of what we do. For example, if someone asks me, “Did you read your Bible today?” I’d look at them like they had three heads—because time in the Word has become as natural to me as breathing. That should be the same goal for all of the postures.

When I began learning about the postures, I felt like I had added eight new chores to my already overloaded calendar. I felt burdened. Now, I am grateful for the postures, and they aren't chores or burdensome.

Jesus never meant for our spiritual disciplines to feel like a list of things to do or burdensome chores.

What are the postures to you?
